My painting process relies on improvisation to develop form. I paint in a loose style, frequently scraping and reapplying the oil. I paint rapidly and use the earlier marks to influence future form.

I stop painting a face when I can see and connect with a human emotion. The face may be distorted and the colours unreal, but if I can see some thoughtful, essentially life lived expression, then I will move on to decide who they are and paint a body.

I take inspiration from old black and white photos of people and observation of others.
